General Travel Tips

Before You Leave

  • Week(s) before:
    • Go through the Destination Planning List.
    • When choosing which seats, you can use a seat map like Seatguru to tell you which ones are desirable, or watch a Youtube video of the flight.  This can help undesirable seats which recline less or are near the restrooms.
  • Day(s) before:
    • Go through Travel Checklist.
    • Download all the movies/shows you plan to watch locally.

Airport Departure

  • We generally use the rule of arrive 2 hours before domestic, 3 hours before international (maybe even more during holidays).
  • If you are unfamiliar with the airport, try to to see ahead of time how large it is and how far your gate will be.  This is especially helpful with tight transfer windows, you don't want to lose time wandering around.
  • Having access to lounges is is helpful to avoid gate crowds and some food.  We also use this to finish download any movies/shows to watch on Wifi.

Airplane

  • Use slippers obtained from hotels for long haul flights.  This allows you to take off your shoes but not be in socks/barefoot.
  • Often on long haul flights, there are free drinks/snacks left in the galley.  I usually go get some and stretch in those areas as well.
Airport Arrival
  • Observe people from your plane so that you can get a general sense if luggage from your plane has arrived on the carousel (alternatively take a look at tags).
  • You can also put airtags in your luggage to get a general sense of where they are periodically.
  • Some airlines give compensation if your bag is not on the carousel by a set time: https://travel-on-points.com/which-airlines-have-a-checked-bag-guarantee/
Hotel Arrival
  • "Suite Talking"
    • Your rapport with the front desk is critical on whether you can secure an upgrade.  They have a lot of autonomy on what they can offer and even if they can't, may advocate to their upline on your behalf if they like you enough.
    • Here's my usual script:
      • Go to check-in counter
      • Have the children come in view or with you to check in to show off cute kids, and my wife starts filming the hotel and talking (showing them you are an influencer)
      • “Suite talk” them using your charm, then ask for complimentary upgrade so the kids can have more room
      • If denied make a paid offer for the suite (this is often negotiable).
    • Another tactic is to ask the agent to break $50 for change to give tips to staff.  If they offer a complimentary upgrade, reward the great service with the tip.  Else keep the change to tip to other staff.
Hotel Stay
  • If you need water, hotel gyms have free water.  We usually just keep bottles and refill.
Navigation
  • Watch youtube videos that show navigation for the places you are going to.  This can help you recognize signs and paths that will confirm you are going the right way.
  • If google maps is available where you are, I have found using "Live View" can help as it draws directional arrows as AR overlays.  This was especially helpful in Shinjuku Station where there was a lot of verticality that prevented us from easily following Google Maps directions.
Power Setup
  • We really like these power strips from Anker.  Coupled with a travel adapter, this has been a great setup for our rooms when we are traveling.
  • We've been using these massive solar power banks for some time.  While they are heavier, we've never run out of power while out with them (provided we recharge them when we get back to our rooms).

Italy (Milan, Venice, and Rome) 2024 Trip Report

Summary

Fantastic 10 day trip to Italy.

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Travel

  • Flew into MXP and then took trains to Venice and Rome.  Took Leonardo Express from Rome to FCO, and flew home from there.
  • Highly advise purchasing city to city trains in advance through https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html or it's respective app.

Accommodations

  • Hyatt Centric Milan
    • We had Hyatt Globalist status for the stay.
    • We spent 1 Free Night Certificate and 45,000 (15,000 points per night) points for 2 nights in 2 rooms (one of which was upgraded to a suite).
    • Point redemption value was about 4.8 cpp.
    • There was a 30 Euro tourist fee (2 night fee for 2 adults and 2 children).
  • Hotel Aquarius Venice
    • We had Choice Platinum status for the stay.
    • We spent 140,000 points for 2 rooms for 3 nights.
    • Point redemption value was about 1.95
    • Interestingly, the hotel did not charge a tourist fee.
  • DoubleTree Hilton Rome Monti
    • We had Hilton Diamond Status for the stay.
    • We spent 480,000 points for 2 rooms for 5 nights for the stay.
    • Point redemption value was about 1.3

Entertainment

Mobile/Internet

  • Airalo
    • We had the best experience with Airalo, it gave us local providers and we could track usage through the app.  Here's our referral if interested for $3 off: https://ref.airalo.com/Z2ez

Laundry

Food

  • The gelato was incredible almost everywhere we went.  We went to Venchi at first but found that other shops were just as good and gave much bigger portions.
  • We got margarita pizzas almost everywhere we went.  This was really economical as they averaged around 7-8 Euro.

Things that went well
  • Almost every place we went took Apple Pay.  This was super convenient.  The only things we had to spend cash on were the gondola and laundry.
  • While we kept our precautions up around pick pocketing, it was not an issue for our entire visit.  We made sure to keep valuables within inside pockets and watched each other's backs when we were in crowded areas.
Lessons for next time
  • While the family car was extremely cheap (45 Euro for family of four), the entire trip from Milan to Venice consisted of screaming kids on a field trip that the chaperones did not keep in check at all.  The Venice to Rome trip was much quieter and enjoyable.  I don't know if I'd try a FrecciaFAMILY fare again.

Park City 2022 Trip Report

Summary

Quick 3 day weekend trip to Park City in November.  Total out of pocket: $1902.75

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Travel

  • Much of our air travel expenses were defrayed by using previously accrued Amex Airline Credits.
  • We flew into SLC and rented a car.  Just a note - SLC to Southwest Gates is really far.  Make sure you allot enough time to walk to your gate upon departure.
  • Rented a car through Costco Travel for a reasonable price.

Accommodations

  • Waldorf Astoria Park City
    • We had Diamond status for the stay.
    • We used 3 free night certificates.
    • Booked a base level 1 King Bed with Fireplace and received a complementary upgrade to a 1 Bedroom Superior Suite with a Queen Sofa bed.  This was an extremely nice gesture and improved the quality of the stay significantly for us.
      • The suite included a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator and gas stove!

Entertainment

  • Unfortunately, we arrived a week before the ski lifts and winter tubing opened.  Although this was very likely why there was almost no one else at the hotel and why we were able to get the upgraded suite.
  • We ended up mostly sledding the entire time.
    • The Park City library had a nice small hill (that is location in the picture above).  They also had free sleds and the library itself is really nice.
    • The FCD hill was less groomed but steeper/longer (shown in the sledding video linked below).
  • In the evening we had daily smores at the hotel (they had free kits).

Mobile/Internet

  • Hotel wifi was great.  LTE/4G reception was great everywhere we went.

Laundry

  • The suite included a full washer and dryer combo with detergent/dryer sheets included!  This was so convenient for us and really nice amenity from the hotel.

Food

  • Maria's Mexican Grill in Salt Lake was pretty good!  I'm usually critical of Mexican food outside of Southern California/Mexico, but enjoyed the food there.
  • We got to try CupBop - Bulgogi in a cup.  It was ok.

Greece (Santorini, Crete, Athens) 2022 Trip Report

Summary

Spent an amazing 12 days in Greece.  3 days in Santorini, 5 days in Crete, and 4 days in Athens.  Total out of pocket: $7,130.19

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Covid Notes

  • There were no testing requirements to travel to Greece.
  • Masking was intermittent, both indoor and outdoor while we were there.
  • The test requirement for re-entry into the US was removed while we were on our trip.

Travel

  • Santorini
    • We pre-rented a car through (https://www.santorini-car-rental.com/en/).  They were a great deal - $116.10 for 3 days!  They also allowed us to pickup the car at the airport and drop it off at the ferry.  It was a great rental experience.
    • You need an International Drivers Permit to drive in Greece.
    • Moving from east to west or vice versa in northern Santorini via google maps took us through some rocky, single lane roads that were very steep.  I would not recommend going these routes unless you are a confident stick shift driver.
    • It was easy, scenic driving all over the island.  It really gave us freedom to move about the island and get groceries as needed.
    • I don't recall any traffic signals, just roundabouts and stop sign intersections.
    • Parking was not horrible outside of Oia at sunset.
    • We booked a Ferry to Crete from Ferryhopper.com.  We had debated upgrading to Club class, but the standard seats were just fine.  There were no assigned seats, it was good that we got on early to pick the ones we wanted.
  • Crete
    • We pre-rented a car through (https://autorentals-crete.gr/).  They picked us up from the ferry and allowed us to return the car to the airport.
    • Driving in Crete is very comfortable.  There is an interesting behavior on the freeway where they straddle the right dividing line.  We figured that this was to allow passers in both oncoming and ongoing traffic at the same time.
    • Most roads are well paved with traffic signals.  There was an "old road" we took through Elounda that was reminiscent of Santorini driving (hilly, one lane) that took us through the countryside.  Got to see several herds of goats on that drive.
    • We took a short 50 min flight to Athens.
  • Athens
    • We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel that cost 45 Euro.  The taxi driver was very friendly, and insisted on picking us up at 4am for the return flight.  He was there to my surprise, ended up giving him 60 Euro for the return trip.
    • We also purchased Ath.ena cards:
      • 5 day non-personalized cards for each adult - $8.62
      • 11 trip discounted personalized cards for each child (We had to fill out https://athenacard.gr/QR_request.dev beforehand and present the QR code) - $5.26
    • The Ath.ena cards worked for the subway, buses, and trams which were plenty sufficient for our travel around the city.  Google maps worked well in terms of navigation and times.

Accommodations

  • Canaves Oia Epitome
    • We had Globalist status for the stay (although this doesn't really matter at SLH).
    • We used 120,000 points for 3 nights.  They also charged us $646.56 extra for the fourth person.
    • Point redemption value was about 2.3 cpp.
    • Booked Honeymoon Suite and that is what we received.  The hotel was full so there was no upgrade offered.
    • It was pretty spacious and the girls really enjoyed the plunge pool.
    • The views of the sunset were fantastic.
  • Blue Palace Elounda
    • We had Platinum status for the stay.
    • We used 280,000 points for 5 nights.
    • Booked Superior Bungalow Seaview, received that for the first 3 nights.  Then got a really fantastic upgrade to what I think was a Maisonette Suite.  It did not have a pool, but it had a very large extended patio area that the girls really enjoyed.  It also was 2 levels which was a great novelty for the girls.
    • Point redemption value was about .9 cpp for Superior Bungalow Seaview, and 1.7 cpp for the Maisonette Suite.
  • InterContinental Athenaeum Athens
    • We had Platinum Ambassador status for the stay.
    • We used 97,000 points for a 4 night stay.
    • Point redemption value was about 2 cpp.
    • Booked King Bed Superior room and was upgraded to what I think was a 1 Bedroom Suite.  We also purchased Club access for $381.06 (this was already factored into my cpp calculation).
    • The room was quite spacious with a comfortable sofa couch and we ate many meals at the Club.  We usually ate breakfast and dinner there, and frequented for drinks/snacks in between.

Entertainment

  • Santorini
    • We visited the middle of Oia at 6am, and got really good pictures without the crowds.  When we revisited at a later time and day (around 2pm) it was very crowded but more of the shops were open so it was nice to have seen it both ways.
    • The prehistoric town of Akrotiri was really cool to see.  It was so well preserved and there were video recreations of how the buildings looked in their prime.  Also it is indoors which gave some relief from the hot sun.
    • The black sand beach at Perissa was really nice.  There was plentiful parking and many nice restaurants around.
  • Crete
    • We took a 6 hour round trip to Chania and Rethimno.  It was a beautifully scenic drive along the northern coast of Crete.
    • The city of Agios Nikolaos is charming and great to walk around.
    • Most of our time was spent resting and relaxing.
  • Athens
    • Was great to see the Acropolis and Parthenon, and the Acropolis museum is wonderful.
    • The view from the top of Lycabettus Hill is gorgeous, and it has a commanding view of the entire city.
    • Walking around the various shopping streets in Plaka and Monastiraki was very pleasant.

Mobile/Internet

  • We opted to use hotel internet and our phones which generally had decent 4G coverage most of the time in all 3 areas we went.

Laundry

  • We did our own laundry by hand washing and hanging.

Food

  • I really enjoyed Slouvlaki and Gyros, and ate them almost everyday.  The greek diet seems so healthy!  It was great to tryout out all the restaurants in the various areas we visited.
  • There were these fusion bao buns at Goodys (a greek fast food chain) that were so good.  I'll try to find a similar equivalent here.
Things that went well
  • Purchasing Club level at the Intercontinental Athens.  Rachel said we should do it and I was glad I listened to her.  It was the only hotel we did not have free breakfast before arriving and it was really nice to be able to eat and unwind there after a long day.
  • The power strip extension cords with plug adapter were all we needed for the entire trip.  I piggybacked the second one onto the first and didn't trip any breakers.  I'll probably not bother bringing the voltage converter for the next international trip as our device chargers are voltage variable.
  • Having a car in Santorini and Crete really gave us mobility to enjoy both islands at our leisure.
  • Getting the Ath.ena cards gave us a ton of mobility in Athens, and once I figured out a tram location really close to my hotel we were able to move about the city quickly and without a ton of walking when we didn't want to (we did a ton of walking but that was mostly perusing locations we liked).
  • Having hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen was a must.  Even though it was June the sun was strong almost every day we were there.
  • People were generally very kind and welcoming every where we went.  Almost everyone spoke English, but seemed to appreciate when we used our limited Greek vocabulary (Good morning, hello, thank you).
Lessons for next time
  • Our luggage was delayed 2 days upon our arrival in Santorini.  We had to scramble to get clothes to wear and additional toiletries in order.  In the future, we're going to try to avoid checked bags if possible for multiple transfer trips and to be sure we have a change of clothes in our carry-ons.

Maldives 2021 Trip Report

Summary

Spent an amazing 11 days at the Waldorf Astoria Maldives.  Total out of pocket: $9421.81

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Covid Notes

  • We got free COVID tests through Kaiser for travel.
  • The Maldives allows for tests 96 hours before initial departure location.  Although we had a layover in Doha that made it exceed 96 hours before we got to Male another test was not necessary (We did not leave the airport, unsure if that makes a difference).
  • We had to fill out the form at https://imuga.immigration.gov.mv/ethd/create 24 hours before arrival (filled out in Doha during layover) and departure.
  • Masks were required at all airports and planes.
  • Masks were only required at buffet breakfast at the resort.

Travel

  • The only method of getting to the resort is via yacht.
  • It was very nice, there is a concierge to ensure that you have a comfortable ride and provide answers to any questions.

Accommodations

  • Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
    • We had Diamond status for the stay.
    • We used 600,000 points and 5 free night certificates for an 11 night stay (you get one free night for booking 4 nights on points).
    • Point redemption value was about 2 cpp.
    • Booked King Overwater Villa for the first 7 nights and then stayed in King Reef Villa for the remaining 4 nights.  They also provided a day use King Beach Villa for our checkout day, which was very kind of them.
    • Both rooms were very spacious.  Two rollaways were provided for the girls.
    • The welcome gifts here were very generous.  We received multiple food gifts through the stay and a birthday cake for our older daughter.
    • The kids club was quite large with a plethora of activities.  There was even a mini water park complete with a bucket that fills and dumps large amounts of water!
    • We had a dedicated concierge Alina who was very kind, organized, and attentive.  We communicated with her over Whats App.  She made our stay so much better and relaxing.
    • The hotel is one hour ahead of Male time, so we needed to set custom time on our watches/phones.

Entertainment

  • The hotel island chain is quite long and we had a couple of enjoyable bike rides.
  • The pool attached to the room are is and we spent most of our time on the deck.  Since our initial room faced the ocean, it was very private and relaxing.
  • The snorkeling around the drop offs was great, and not very far from our rooms.  Saw some sharks and rays on the bridges coming to and from meals.
  • There were Stand Up Paddle boards, paddle boats, and snorkel equipment all free to rent out.
  • The girls really got into ping pong and foosball each day.

Mobile/Internet

  • Hotel internet was understandably on the weak side.  It was serviceable for most of our needs.

Laundry

  • We did our own laundry by washing and hanging (our clothes dried fast in the heat of the sun).

Food

  • As expected food was incredibly expensive.  We brought a suitcase of ramen and Spam.
  • Our general strategy was to eat a hefty breakfast, snack on food we brought for lunch, and then share a sandwich/pizza for dinner.  That generally kept our meals around $100 a day after tip.
  • Lunch offerings were limited to Nava and the Ledge.  Dinner restaurants
  • We ate one dinner at Li Long.  That came out to about $400 for the four of us.
  • We attended happy hour at Peacock Alley each day (complimentary for Hilton Gold and Diamond) and our girls really enjoyed this.  One of the bartenders Suhdeep was very kind to our daughters and they very much looked forward to visiting him each day.
Things that went well
  • Was really happy with the Anker Power Strip.  We brought a 2nd one and this really helps our preferred power setup especially around the beds.
  • Bug spray was really effective and we found it necessary even with the hotel's own consistent spraying.
Lessons for next time
  • The 9 hour overnight layover in Doha was incredibly difficult as we were exhausted.  We are resolved to book shorter or longer layovers (and get a hotel) in the future to allow time to rest.
  • Since our food situation was so limited, we will likely bring more varied options with us in the future if we stay in an expensive and remote location.

Chicago 2021 Trip Report

View of downtown Chicago from Shedd's Aquarium

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Covid Notes

  • No testing necessary to fly/return.
  • Masks required at airport/airplane unless eating/drinking.

Travel

  • Southwest airfare was free after using Amex Airline Credits, 21,046 Southwest points, and a Companion Pass.
  • 3 day "L" train and bus Ventra tickets were $60 for our family of four.
    • We found that Ventra tickets are not accepted on the subway system.
  • We opted to take Uber on the day back to the airport for $52.28.

Accommodations

  • Radisson Blu Aqua Chicago
    • The stay was $58.72 (2 nights "urban fee") after using 2 free night certificates and 70,000 points.
    • Our cents per point redemption value was .0076.
    • I was able to get one night of the "urban fee" waived due to elite status, but had to pay for the other 2 nights.
    • The hotel was in a very central part of the city and it was very easy to get around either by walking or taking the convenient bus system.

Entertainment

  • Field Museum
    • Fantastic place!  Really enjoyed the exhibits, especially the Dinosaur one.
  • Shedd's Aquarium
    • Huge place with many different levels and animals to enjoy.
  • Navy Pier
    • Spent time playing in the outdoor fountains and within the Children's Museum.

Mobile/Internet

  • Used our usual mobile phones.
  • Radisson Wifi was decent at around ~5-10mbps after VPN.

Laundry

  • We just saved our laundry until we returned home.

Food

  • Tried deep dish pizza from Giordano's, but the crust was burnt and not really enjoyable.  Perhaps because it was rush hour and super busy.  However, we tried one from Geno's East that was fantastic.
Things that went well
  • Flying out of SNA was great.  I hope to do more trips out of that airport in the future.
  • Ordering food via pickup worked out well for us.  There were outdoor tables in the surrounding areas that we got to use.
  • Having a full first full day made us exhausted and set us up to sleep well for the subsequent day.  This worked out well for us, and we just took the 2nd day at our leisure.
  • Really happy with our extension outlet, picked up a 2nd one for future trips.  It's great for getting outlets by the bed if they aren't provided and just getting more USB ports.

Oahu 2021 Trip Report

Queens Beach

Summary

11 days in beautiful Waikiki!  Total out of pocket: $2462.89.

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Covid Notes

  • You must register for https://travel.hawaii.gov/#/ for current travel to Hawaii.
  • We signed up for testing 3 days prior to departure through Kaiser Permanente.  You schedule an e-visit through their site and show up for drive thru testing on that day.
  • It was first come first serve, so we arrived about 20 min before they opened.  There were about 7-8 cars in front of us.  The line was extremely long behind us.
  • We got results the next morning online and uploaded the results to https://travel.hawaii.gov/#/.  A QR code was provided which we provided at the airport screening upon arrival.

Travel

  • I found a fantastic deal on Southwest for $161 round trip flights from Long Beach to Honolulu.  Then I signed up for a companion pass which made one of the fares $11.20 round trip which brought the cost to $494.20 for our family of four.  Finally, I used the airline fee credit from our credit cards to make the flights free!
  • We reserved a car a couple months beforehand through Costcotravel.  We went with Budget since the terminal is in the airport and we avoided taking the shuttle.

Accommodations

  • Hyatt Centric Waikiki
    • We had Globalist status for the stay.
    • We used 45,000 points and 2 free night certificates for 5 nights total.
    • Point redemption value was about 2.8 cpp.
    • Was upgraded to City View Suite with 2 queen beds.  Was quite roomy.
    • Since we paid with points and had Globalist status, there were no resort fees and parking was free.
    • The hotel provided free beach chairs/umbrella/boogie boards.  This was a great perk.
    • They also loaned us a betta fish which the girls loved watching and feeding.
  • Royal Hawaiian
    • We had Platinum status for the stay.
    • We used 180,000 points and paid for 1 night to take advantage of the Marriott double points/nights promotion for 6 nights total.
    • Point redemption value was about 1.6 cpp.
    • Was upgraded to Historic Garden Junior Suite.  Was plenty of room for us, the girls ended up sleeping on the sofa chair and bedroom bench.
    • We received muffins and pink macadamia nuts as a welcome gift.
    • The kids enjoyed the large Sheraton pool and feeding the huge Koi fish.

Entertainment

  • Beaches
    • All beaches in Hawaii are public and most of them have great facilities.  We spent most of our leisure time here.
  • Dole Farm
    • Was too crowded and hot when we visited.  Probably won't be doing this one again even though the Dole Whip and fresh pineapple was delicious.
  • Chambers Escape Room
    • The girls enjoyed doing the temple.  Great effects and puzzles.

Mobile/Internet

  • Our mobile coverage was pretty good all over the island and both hotels had excellent wifi.  The Royal Hawaiian also offers a free mifi rental which was useful the few times my cell coverage was spotty.

Laundry

  • Sheraton Waikiki allowed reservations of their laundry room (which accepted credit cards).  This made it very easy and convenient.

Food

  • Both hotels were in the heart of Waikiki.  There are so many affordable good choices around that we enjoyed.
  • Some other highlights were:
    • Giovanni's Shrimp - we went to both the truck and the less busy Honolulu location
    • Matsumoto's Shave Ice - our younger daughter kept wanting to go back
    • Yummy Korean BBQ - really fresh side vegetables
    • Tanaka Ramen - great ramen and karaage
    • Jujubing Dessert Cafe - my wife really likes injeolmi
    • Tropical Tribe - really liked their Brazillian Acai with premium toppings
    • Big Islands Candies - their milk chocolate macadamia cookies are soooooooooo good
Things that went well
  • Staying on California time had us waking up early and getting to all the good beach spots without any parking issues.
  • Renting a car gave us so much freedom to travel the island.  It was a great choice even with the hefty parking fee at the Royal Hawaiian.  There was also a rental car shortage and we saw some people getting turned away at the counter.  Glad we reserved far in advance.
  • The free beach chair/umbrella loaners from Hyatt Centric Waikiki were fantastic.  Made our beach visits very comfortable.
  • The Go Pro Hero9 was great.  Was really cool to incorporate time lapse into our family videos.
  • The extension cord with power strip was super useful: Anker Power Strip
  • Went 2 for 2 on suite upgrades!  The larger rooms certainly made our stay much more enjoyable.  Can't be certain but I think adding that it was our anniversary/my birthday and contacting ahead of time may have helped.
Lessons for next time
  • I cut my feet pretty deep at Lanikea beach.  Should've known better and wore water shoes in.
