Dubai/Maldives 2018 Trip Report

Admiring a rainbow in the Maldives

Summary

Our Dubai/Maldives trip was one of the more ambitious/luxurious trips we've done and one I didn't think was achievable/affordable before. We spent 4 days in Dubai and 8 days in the Maldives. Total out of pocket: $8312.59.

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Travel Visa

  • For Dubai, US citizens with passports do not need a visa provided the following:
    • Original passport signed by the bearer, should not expire within six (6) months from the expected time of arrival in the UAE.
    • Confirmed round-trip airline ticket or airline ticket to other destination(s).
    • More information can be found here.
  • For Maldives, a 30 day free visa is provided if the following criteria are met:
    • Should posses a valid passport with Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) -(standard ICAO Annex 9, chapter 3.10.1) and should have at least 6 months validity
    • Have a valid ticket to continue the journey out of Maldives
    • Have enough funds to cover the expenses for duration of the stay in Maldives. (US$100 + $50 dollars per day) or a confirmation of reservation in a Tourist Resort or a Hotel
    • Caution: Full thirty day visa is not a right of the passenger to claim, but lies at the discretion of the Immigration to issue not more than thirty days and any period less than thirty days.
    • More information can be found here.
  • We had no issues in either country.

Airport

  • Used Hilton LAX for parking through Cheapairportparking.
  • DXB is massive.  There are many, many stores to visit for the avid shopper.
  • There is a nice Conrad lounge when you land in Male.  Representatives from the hotel will take you straight there.  You can get a nice free massage while waiting for your seaplane.
  • On the return trip we did not have time to use a lounge, but there does appear to be a lounge for Priority Pass members.

Travel

  • The seaplane from Male to the hotel was $1680 round trip for the four of us.  I arranged it with the Conrad before arriving.  It stopped at one other hotel and took around 45 minutes.
  • Uber was our preferred mode of travel in Dubai.  We tried the train and the free shuttle to the mall, but Uber was most comfortable and convenient to get around.

Accomodations

  • JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai
    • We had Titanium status for the stay.
    • I was going to use points but the AAA rate was only $130.37 a night after taxes so we went with that.
    • We did not get upgraded to a suite for the first night but I asked again on the morning of the 2nd day and we were moved to a very nice suite!
    • Breakfast was in the lounge and was a very nice spread.  They even had fresh honeycomb!
  • Conrad Maldives
    • We had Diamond status for the stay.
    • We used 380,000 points + 3 free weekend night certificates + $84 in hotel green fees.
    • Point redemption value was about 1.4 cents.
    • We were upgraded to a Spa Overwater Bungalow which had a connected room with massage tables.  We used it as a 2nd bedroom for the kids to romp around in the morning.
    • The Majaa kids club was outstanding.  Best we've encountered yet.  You could schedule and drop off the kids to get some couples time.  The girls loved it and use the gifts they received (backpack, hat) to this day.
    • Breakfast was in the main restaurant and had an wide, tasty buffet offering.
  • Grand Hyatt Dubai
    • We had Explorist status for the stay.
    • Used a free night certificate.  They were nice enough to grant access to the lounge and gave us an upgraded room.
    • Breakfast offering here was more sparse but was welcomed.

Entertainment

  • The Dune Bashing/Sand Boarding/Camel Riding/Bedouin Camp experience is one of the most unique I've experienced.  Highly recommend it.
  • I had hoped to visit the souks but the heat was oppressive.  We visited the new ones that were indoor but they were not as impressive as I imagine the old souks are.
  • Mostly snorkeled and swam at the Conrad.

Mobile/Internet

  • We had mobile plan coverage in Dubai.
  • The Conrad had decent Wifi.  It was amazing to sit in such a remote location and be able to surf the web...

Laundry

  • We hand washed our clothes in the Maldives and hang dried them.

Local Currency

  • We got a small amount of AED in DXB for tipping purposes but credit card acceptance was widespread.

Food

  • In Dubai we visited chain restaurants in the mall and surrounding areas.
  • We packed a whole suitcase of ramen and dried food for the stay at Conrad Rangali.  We would fill up at breakfast and then snack on the suitcase food.  There was also a daily tea and happy hour which we attended every day.
  • We did have dinner at the Sunset Grill one night which came out to $139.36.
  • My wife and I also had lunch at Ithaa, the underwater restaurant.  That came out to $517.44.

Security

  • We felt very safe at both Dubai and Maldives.

Tipping

  • We tipped our guides for the Dubai tours.  For our sit down restaurant meals we tipped 15%.

Language/Culture

  • English is widely spoken in both Dubai and Conrad Maldives.  We had no trouble with language at all.
  • We were wary at wearing more revealing clothes and holding hands in Dubai, but saw instances of both pretty widespread in the tourist areas.
  • Most people we met were from India or Pakistan (UAE nationals are only ~11.5% of the population).  Studying up on the geography/culture of those 2 countries allowed me to have good conversations with the locals.

Seoul 2019 Trip Report

Drumming at Minsok Korean Folk Village

Summary

It was a fantastic trip, we went all over the city and averaged 20,000 steps a day! Spent all 10 days in Seoul.  Total out of pocket: $7660.37 (forgot to add $228.49 in parking expenses to spreadsheet).

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Travel Visa

  • No Visa necessary to South Korea for US passport holders.

Airport

  • Used QuikPark LAX.  It was more expensive but their shuttles are multiple and quick.
  • Since our flight left late we couldn't use the KAL lounge.  Ended up spending $120 of Priority Pass credit at PF Changs!  Unfortunately, this is no longer an option for PP.
  • We used the Matina Lounge at ICN.  Food was decent and it wasn't too crowded.

Travel

  • We took the airport bus 6030 from ICN to our hotel and on the return journey as well.  Only 15,000 KRW each way.  You can purchase tickets both at the airport and the hotel.
  • We made most of our travel via subway, it was very easy, cheap, and safe. You purchase a T-Money card at convenience store, preload it, and you are good to go.
  • Taxi drivers were a hit or miss. Some were really friendly and offered great tips, some seemed like they hated life.

Accommodations

  • Conrad Seoul
    • We had Diamond status for the stay.
    • Used 480,000 points for 10 nights.
    • Point redemption value was about 1 cpp.
    • We did not get a complimentary suite upgrade at Conrad, so opted to pay for it. Talked them down from $1200 to about $650. Feel the suite was totally worth it.
    • Breakfast in the restaurant is one of the best buffet spreads I've experienced at a hotel.
      • We opted for breakfast in the lounge most days since the restaurant had an extra charge for the kids.  The lounge buffet breakfast had a nice selection as well.
    • The lounge was very comfortable and staff was super friendly.  Had great views of the city on clear days.

Entertainment

  • We enjoyed the Alive Museum and Dynamic Maze far more than I thought we would!  This is all the girls talked about after the trip.
  • The Seoul Children's Museum had a ton of hands on activities for the girls to do.
  • Street markets in Dondaemun and Myeongdong were crowded but lively with great food.
  • Everland was bigger than I remember and we were entertained the whole day.  A ton of hilly walking though!  Also, the animal exhibits are some the best we've seen.  The animals were closer and more lively than other zoos/animal parks we've been to.
  • Minsokchon (Korean Folk Village) was great to visit.  Loved the old houses and performances.
  • Gwangmeong Cave was a wonder to visit.  Sprawling underground cave that is now a tourist attraction.

Mobile/Internet

  • We rented a mifi device for ~$5 a day from the airport. Internet speed was great.

Laundry

  • You can search google maps for the term 빨래방.
  • There wasn't any on Yeoeudo island since it's a business district, but found one near Daebang station.  The proprietor husband/wife was super friendly and taught us how to use the machines.
  • The first time I took a taxi there, but 2nd time felt comfortable enough to take the bus.

Local Currency

  • We exchanged a small amount of cash at the airport at an unfavorable exchange rate.

Food

  • We ate at the lounge frequently, but local food was really affordable and tasty.  Really enjoyed eating all over Seoul.
  • Interestingly the Kang Ho-dong Baekjeong in Myeongdong was a really poor experience in both staff and quality of meat compared to the states.  That was the only restaurant that was a let down for us in Korea.

Security

  • Did not feel unsafe at any time in Seoul.

Family

  • Brought Pockit stroller, was a lifesaver at Everland and other hilly places we visited.

Tipping

  • We tipped our travel guide for the Minsokchon/Gwangmeong Cave trip, but it's mostly a non-tipping culture.

Language/Culture

  • English signage was plentiful but it was varied in how much locals could speak.  It would be helpful to learn some basic phrases and leverage Google Translate.
  • Slight bowing of the head is part of Korean culture when greeting/parting with people.  It will earn you goodwill if you do it, especially paired with "Anyong Haseyo/Anyonge Geseyo" (Respectful versions of Hello/Goodbye).

London/Edinburgh 2019 Trip Report

View of Edinburgh from Holyrood Park

Summary

Spent 5 days in London, 4 days in Edinburgh. Cold but fantastic trip! Total out of pocket: $4474.74.

Travel Notes (All prices below are USD unless otherwise noted)

Travel Visa

  • No Visa necessary to UK for US passport holders.

Airport

  • Used CheapAirportParking to book at Hilton LAX and paid majority at hotel with Aspire for the 14x point return.
  • Stayed at KAL Lounge using Priority Pass.  Was decent enough stay.  Chicken wings were excellent, but they ran out.
  • Airfare was actually $1300 more, but used my AA gift cards I had been saving.  These were gained by credit card annual free credit.

Travel

  • In London we used Heathrow Express to get to Paddington station and then walked to the Hilton Metropole.  The train ride was excellent!  Only took about 15 min and roughly $31.
  • My wife and I each ended up adding $32 each to our respective Oyster cards.  The girls were free as they were both under 11.  We ended up using almost the entire balance of $64 during our 4 days in London.
  • Used Uber once to get from JW Marriott to Euston station for the Caledonian Sleeper.
  • Caledonian Sleeper was a hit with the girls.  However, the schedule was pretty brutal:
    • Board: 10:30 PM
    • Breakfast: 6:45 AM
    • Must be off-train: 8:40 AM
  • Given the price and the schedule we likely won't do a sleeper train again.
  • We rented a car in Alamo Edinburgh through Amex Travel for the entire stay.  We picked up in Edinburgh city center and then chose to drop off at the airport.  This way we wouldn't have to take the train to the airport.
    • Did not need an IDP, my US drivers license sufficed
    • I chose automatic since I was not confident shifting gears with my left hand (everything is reversed).
    • Driving in Edinburgh was a mixed bag.  Right turns were difficult at times, and it was hard to know what ground markings meant.  Roundabouts are great though.
    • Chose a Ford Focus, was upgraded to Jaguar XE.
    • Mifolds were great to have again for the rental car.
  • Google maps was excellent in both London for tube/bus schedules and Edinburgh for driving directions.

Accommodations

  • Hilton Metropole
    • We had Diamond status for the stay.
    • Paid cash ($418.92) to use Amex offer and points promotion.  Wasn't worth it.
    • Our 2 times we were upgraded to Family Superior Room and Family Plus Superior Room.  No luck this time, got Queen Superior Room.
    • Executive suite had decent offerings for lunch and dinner (mostly sandwiches).
    • Breakfast here is in the restaurant and has an excellent buffet spread.
    • Also has indoor pool and sauna room.
  • JW Marriott Grosvenor House London
    • We had Titanium status for the stay.
    • Used 170,000 points + 3 Suite Night Upgrades.  Was upgraded to Park View Suite which was normally ~$2600 per night, this is our highest per night redemption so far!
    • Point redemption value was a whopping 4.5 cpp.
    • Breakfast was in executive lounge.  Lunch and dinner spreads were impressive with large number of alcohol choices (we don't drink so I don't have more details here).
  • Radisson Blu Edinburgh
    • We had Gold status for the stay.
    • Used 356,000 points for Family Room.
    • Point redemption value was roughly .4 cpp.
    • Family room had a small children's play area that the kids loved.
    • Breakfast was in the restaurant downstairs.  It had a good buffet spread with omelets and other hot options that could be ordered a la a  free of charge.

Entertainment

  • The girls loved Kidzania.  They enjoyed stocking the supermarket the most...
  • Warner Bros Harry Potter tour was impressive but too crowded.  Moved through without really getting to take in some sections due to how many people were there.
  • The Gingerbread cabin at York and Albany was really quaint.  The girls really enjoyed being able to decorate the giant gingerbread cookie!
  • The Scotland Explorer family pass was great value.  We only were able to get to 4 castles/palaces and still feel like we got a really good deal!  That and Arthur's Seat were my favorite parts of the trip.
  • Edinburgh Zoo had really interesting exhibits and we got to see a good deal of the animals even in the cold weather.

Mobile/Internet

  • Our mobile plans covered use in the UK.

Laundry

  • We walked to Central Wash - Launderette off Crawford St. in London.  Wash was 7 GBP, dry was 3 (1 GBP every 10 min)!
  • Didn't get to a laundry in Edinburgh.  The place we were going to go closed early on Christmas Eve and nothing was open for Christmas.  We ended up hand-washing and hanging clothes to dry around the room.

Local Currency

  • Against our better judgement we exchanged at the airport at $1.61 USD to GBP.  The actual rate was $1.31 and I saw many places near our hotel that were ~$1.40.
  • We only changed $100 for tipping and cash only places.  Both London and Edinburgh were great for contactless pay.
    • Apple pay was accepted almost everywhere we went, so I left my wallet in hotel safe most of the vacation.

Food

  • Leveraged hotel breakfasts and lounges heavily.
  • Used Google, Yelp, and Tripadvisor reviews to find decent restaurants that the girls would eat at.
  • Also went grocery shopping and used fridge in Edinburgh.
  • This may be sacrilege, but we still don't see what all the fuss is about regarding Nandos.

Security

  • Brought body pouch for wallet in London.  However, since Apple pay was so widely accepted stopped carrying it.  Kept phone in zippable front breast pocket.
  • Did not feel unsafe at any time in any of our locations during the trip.
  • Also did not notice any pickpocket attempts even in the busy areas but there are notices to be aware.

Family

  • Brought the mifolds and they worked great for the rental car.

Tipping

  • Gave 10% tips at restaurants.

Cold Weather Kit

  • Brought umbrellas and a rain poncho.
  • The waterproof sneakers I bought worked like a charm for both city walking and hiking.
  • This beanie and neck warmer were great too!  Both my daughters kept borrowing the neck warmer.
  • The gloves I bought worked ok for phone use but were too cold for the climates I tried them.  ~4 C/40 F.
